What is airsoft?
Airsoft utilizes air powered replica guns that shoot plastic bb's for live reality based combat gaming and training. The Airsoft guns used are replicas of real life guns but they are designed to be safe and legal. The usual ammo is 6mm plastic BBs weighing on average around 0.2g. Airsoft guns propel the BBs using air from a gas, spring or electric-powered system.
Airsoft combat skirmishes and games can run from re-spawning video game styles to more realistic attack and defend. The intention is to be fun and safe.
Airsoft is also used by law enforcement, military, security personal and civilians for reality based training. The advantages being they may use real world tactics and kit safely with no permanent injury, damage or fear of death. Facilities like arena shoot houses can be arranged to recreate the most complex or simple training scenarios, safely.
Airsoft replica guns are not convertible to real firearms, and should not be confused with, simunition, blank-firers or airguns. The similarities between Airsoft guns and real firearms is only in the size, shape and functionality. Again, Airsoft guns can not be modified to shoot real cartridges in any form.
How much does it hurt? The pain of being shot can vary depending on the range and power of the replica. Longer ranges will feel like a tap but close range shots can give a good sting. One of the best explanations we heard is that it feels like someone snapping you with a rubber band. Airsoft can cause minor injuries such as nicks, welts and BB size bruises. Proper eye and face protection is required because of course with any projectile one can loose an eye or a tooth if protection isn't worn. As a note we suggest always wearing full seal eye protection, full face and ear coverage as well as gloves.
Please keep in mind that there are Federal, State and Local laws that regulate the use of airsoft guns. So, before you buy your first airsoft gun, we highly recommend that you research the laws in your area first in order to avoid any unwanted encounters with Law Enforcement. The best way to find out about these is to contact your local airsoft store, fields, teams, forums and police department.
